The Hockey Academy program at Smithers Secondary School replaces or supplements a student's regular PE course and offers 90+ hours of instruction both on and off the ice. There is no minimum skill requirement as skill development is the main objective of this program. Students can earn their grade-equivalent PE credit upon successful completion of the program.
Part of the Hockey Canada Skills AcademyTM, this program provides both on-ice instruction as well as off-ice integration of weight training, fitness testing, minor games and other PE activities. Students are required to provide all their own equipment including a certified helmet with full face protection and appropriate neck guard. Jerseys and socks are proved as part of the academy fee.
All applicants must submit a Hockey Skills Academy Application form as well as a medical form, both of which can be downloaded from the Hockey Skills Academy website. Secondary aged students who wish to participate in the program but who are not enrolled at SSS should inform their school administrator. The Basketball Academy program at Smithers Secondary School replaces or supplements a student's regular PE course and offers 90+ hours of instruction both on and off the court. The program offers students from across the School District an opportunity to grow their game with elite-level instruction that takes place on the court, in the classroom and in the weight room. There is no minimum skill requirement as skill development is the main objective of this program.
The academy is open to boys and girls in grades 8-10. To make the program available to all students, sessions are scheduled outside of the regular school timetable, including mornings and weekends outside of the official BC high school basketball season
Specialty academies are subject to a supplemental fee.
