Elementary students in our district have access to hands-on learning and projects through a suite of tools and materials that foster the development of learning new skills and technologies. This project-based-learning approach enriches the Career and ADST (Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies) outcomes for students. Students don’t often get the chance to learn skills using tools that are brand new to them, and with these new tools comes engagement and confidence.
At Muheim Elementary, Careers Day is held in the late spring; students from K-7 sign up for three workshops to hear local professionals talk about and demonstrate their careers in action! Students get the opportunity to try their hand with some of these skill sets with help from experts. Presenters not only discuss what they do for work; they share with students how they can pursue a path into that field.
At Twain Sullivan Elementary, Industry Day is held in the spring to showcase all the ways in which industrial ways of working happen around us. This is a fantastic way for our students to experience the industrial nature of local economies, and the ways in which these economies support local families. Conversations with local tradespeople and experts help students to make the connection between the everyday people they see in the community and professionals with specialized skills and knowledge.
Thank you to our local businesses and entrepreneurs for making these rich learning opportunities happen!
